Cold Quasars: The Death of Galaxies with Dr. Allison Kirkpatrick

What are quasars? Are Black Holes Really Black? Dr. Allison Kirkpatrick, astrophysicist at the University of Kansas, recently announced her discovery of cold quasars a new object in the field of astronomy — galaxies featuring an abundance of cold gas that can produce new stars despite having a quasar at the center. The breakthrough finding overturns assumptions about the end state of galaxies and may represent a phase of the death of a galaxy that was previously unknown. John Michael Godlier spoke to Dr. Kirkpatrick about this discovery as well as the future of the Milky Way galaxy and its eventual merger with Andromeda. Discussing if we will need to worry about a future where our galaxy becomes a quasar and earth possibly becomes in the path of a blazar. As well as how supermassive black holes collide, if black holes are really black and how black holes can get ejected due to collisions and wander through the universe unseen.

Season 2, Episode 12: Shany Danieli

Do Galaxies with No Dark Matter Prove it Exists? Shany Danieli, part of a team from Yale using the Dragonfly Array made observations of an ultra-diffuse galaxy, NGC 1052-DF2. Through their observations they were able to determine that it has little to no dark matter.

Season 2, Episode 10: David Kipping

The Halo Drive, using a laser to gain fuel free relativistic propulsion from a black hole. By shooting a laser close to the event horizon of a black hole, Dr. David Kipping’s conceptual star drive could lead to travelling across the milky way from one black hole to another as well as techno signatures from advanced civilizations that might already be using this intergalactic relay system.
