John Michael Godier spoke to Dr. Karen Meech, who leads the Astrobiology research team at the University of Hawaii which discovered the first interstellar object, named ‘Oumuamua, by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope. Dr. Meech’s team recently led the characterization to determine the size, shape, color and light curve of this first interstellar visitor from afar – ‘Oumuamua.

The first interstellar object, named ‘Oumuamua, was discovered in October 2017 by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope in Hawaii. The object is of unknown origin and could be a comet or asteroid. However according to a recent paper by Dr. Avi Loeb of Harvard University and Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, it may possibly be an artificial alien light sail. We spoke to Dr. Loeb about that paper.
